Navajo Artisan Copper and Sterling Overlay Cross Pendant
This lovely copper and sterling cross pendant was handcrafted by Navajo artisan Wylie Secatero. The intricate silver design work was done using a unique method known as overlay.
Navajo overlay is constructed from two layers of sterling silver. A design is traced on a sheet of silver and then painstakingly cut out by hand with a jeweler's saw. This top design layer is then silver-soldered to another sheet of silver, which becomes the bottom layer. Texturing is added to the bottom layer in all the open areas of the design using a hammer and a small punch, and the piece is trimmed to its final shape and size. Next the assembled item is hammered into its final form, contoured, and blackened to enhance the negative areas of the design. Lastly, the top surface is buffed to produce either a matte-like satin finish or a mirror-like high polish.
- Pendant is approximately 2 1/2" long and 1 3/8" wide
- Artist's initials are stamped on the back
